The Dohány street Ghetto memorial wall- Budapest 2015
köztéri művészeti akció | 1074 Budapest, Dohány utca 32-34. | Map | 2015
The memorial wall at Dohány street was meant to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Holocaust. The wall was made by Peter Sugár and László Kara, architects, with the close cooperation of the S’39.

Our team designed all of the wall surfaces, the metal gate, and the memorial wall itself. The concrete surface is delicately ornate, and forms a map of the old Jewish Ghetto, with all of the most important parts marked down. The inscriptions in the corten steel bring to memory the history of the city and the Holocaust, its main actors and events, and a psalm is also hidden in it. The main angle was to create a place of intimate remembrance in one of the busiest parts of Budapest. The goal was to slow time and space with this massive wall in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city, and to force people to stop and remember what had happened here. The wall provides an interactive experience, as the map has small peep holes behind which photographs and inscriptions bring the past to light. The psalm invites everyone to prayer and commiseration.
